History family business
The history of the pottery begins before 1918. In the attic of his small house, next to the beds of the two oldest children hammered Hermanus Zaalberg (born January 16, 1880 Leiden - deceased October september 1,958 there) his first turntable after a long there working themselves to learn spinning. His appeal was actually textile artist, but he was very good model: it was his entrance into the clay. In the kitchen he built a kind of oven for the enamel samples and after much experimentation and practice he could run and he had a few good glaze recipes. The times were bad but in the spring of 1918 he resigned from Brouwer's Pottery and started his own company with borrowed money.
. 1918-1937 Herman Zaalberg Sr. (Pottery Rhine in Zoeterwoude)
His pottery initially given the name "The Rhine," but later renamed Potterij Zaalberg. His eleven year old son Meindert was involved from the beginning. Room Bergs concentrated on making tubular and spherical vases, which were decorated with colored glazes, often running or with the course referred rough structure, easy-fashioned hand turned pottery without decoration, further stoneware tile panels, garden sculptures in deep solid color and crockery .
For years, Willem Coenraad Brouwer (1877-1933) as a supplier for florists the rich alone, but around 1920 he received competition from a new generation of hand-working potters. Especially in the vicinity of Leiden and The Hague settled a remarkable number of artisan potters who vases, pots and dishes made with beautiful glazes as the only decoration. The new concept of flower arrangements were now widely accepted and stimulated probably this sudden flowering of decorative handicraft product. At the same time this new pottery was gratefully used by modern interior designers. The craft ceramics, whether or not filled with flowering branches plants or flowers, fit perfectly into the tight and bright interiors -. (Www.zilverbank.nl)
Besides its own products also work from Chris Agterberg, Theo van Doesburg, Chris Lebeau, Jan Schonk executed and others.

On his 80th birthday in 1987 wrote the Museum Princessehof: "Harmony, love for nature, respect for others and a heartfelt reverence for the Creator are the soul of the work of Meindert Zaalberg."
Meindert went looking for the sources of pure form and structure by studying museum collections in particular, the ancient Chinese and Japanese ceramics could tempt him. His first study trip to London, he made at eighteen, and he made it a habit to old age to the world ceramic traditions to get to know up close.
Although Potterij Zaalberg, such as the family business since 1936 is called, since 1932 use ceramics manufacturing in the form of sober-cut tea and dinner sets, always with playful names like Ringeling and Hollebol, the company maintains a large distance from the Bauhaus -streven to responsibly utility well to incorporate in mass production. Small scale and craftsmanship remain Room Bergs feature.
Even shortly after the Second World War, when the Dutch pottery industry was forced to temporarily only to produce much needed breakfast plates and milk cups, Meindert Zaalberg managed to extract to here by drawing a sharp line between artistic creation and industrial production.
In the period 1955- the 1,965th creates large demand for serene pottery of Ikebana flower arranging can feed the fad. Precisely Hall Bergs Japanese-like vases and jars are perfect for arranging at least two branches and a flower.
In 1958, the tavern is the White House on the Hoge Rijndijk purchased by Meindert Zaalberg which draws a pottery, which was previously located elsewhere on the Rijndijk.
