Rare Schoonhoven Holland Aqua Gray Handled Saucer Art Deco Frans van Katwijk
All of the art work and collectibles being sold by Adams-Byrd Fine Art & Antiques have been collected and selected one at a time by the proprietor, an art historian with many years of training and experience in university art history departments, museums, galleries, and historic sites both in the U.S. and abroad.  The business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years. The art and collectibles that we are offering to eBay buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.
This saucer is unlike any other Schoonhoven piece that we have ever seen.  It has a very mid-century modern look with a bold teal and gray glaze with fantastic curves.  It would be a unique addition to a mid century modern or contemporary kitchen or dining room.   Its streamlined look would make it a great accent piece or pop of color in any room of the home.
Please note: Based on online research (of the few modern - and not traditional Gouda - pieces available), we have found the design of the pitcher we have in this glaze attributed to Frans van Katwijk, ca. 1935.  The large pitcher we compared our small pitcher to was sold by an auction house in Amsterdam in 2010 and was in a black glaze.  After a very successful career with Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven, Frans van Katwijk started his own workshop in Gouda in 1946.
Condition: This dish is in fantastic condition with no cracks, crazing, chips or defects in the glaze.
It has handpainted markings on bottom read "546 MADE IN" followed by the impressed "HOLLAND PS."  It was made by Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven.
The dish measures 6" in diameter. The disk handle has a 1" diameter. The furthest point of the
handle is 6.75" from the opposite rim.
This is a wonderful piece of vintage art pottery with a wonderful art deco look.
We have several other pieces with this glaze that will be listed, but this is the only dish and the only piece with a great disk handle. This shallow dish is shown next to a cup and saucer to show its relative size. To showcase its versatility, we have also shown it as a saucer or coaster for the cup itself.
